What is IBRA?

All about IBRA

IBRA is a World Mass Media ministry called IBRA Media (formerly IBRA Radio). IBRA UK is based in the UK and has co-workers situated here and around the country.

What does IBRA do?

Can you imagine 250 hours of Christian radio in 85 languages, being broadcast every day to more than 100 countries, resulting in thousands of listeners making contact with IBRA's workers and partners, and an average of 700 people coming to faith in Jesus every day?! That might sound exaggerated, and yet it is true! Of course it took time for IBRA to develop such a ministry, under God's guiding hand. So what exactly is IBRA? How did it grow into the effective ministry it is today?

The Beginning

Rev. Lewi Pethrus, founder of the Pentecostal Movement in Sweden, started to promote a vision of free Christian radio in the summer of 1949. Several ideas were tried out, such as test broadcasts from Radio Luxembourg, along with a lot of planning and preparation. Finally, IBRA Radio (International Broadcasting Association) was formed, and on 29 July 1955 the first programmes were broadcast from a Short Wave transmitter in Tangiers, North Africa. IBRA was now on air - for several hours a day in 8 languages - with programmes for children and youth, music programmes and church services.

In a short time, IBRA radio became well known both in Sweden and internationally. From the outset, IBRA was a missionary venture with a heart and a goal to reach the unreached with the Gospel. After just a few years, there were broadcasts in no less than 23 languages from Tangiers, and one popularity survey placed IBRA at number 15 among the 2000 or so Short Wave stations of the world!

The work grows

In the 1960's, IBRA's international ministry expanded and broadcasts on local stations began in Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia. In 1971 IBRA began transmitting from Portugal, and reached the whole of Europe and most of the Soviet Union! During the 1970's and 1980's there was a tremendous focus on the Soviet Union and only God knows what role IBRA played in reaching people in that huge nation during the Iron Curtain period. In the 1990's IBRA increased their production of Arabic programmes for the Middle East and North Africa, and over the years about 2,000 house churches have been planted in that region through IBRA's ministry!

The work continues to grow worldwide, reaching more people in Far Asia and more broadcasts into West Africa. In the last 5 years, IBRA has started broadcasting in 35 new languages. This is indeed a work of God, and the adventure goes on...

UK History

For several years, IBRA Sweden has had a working relationship with AoG, UK. During the 1960's, the main focus was reaching Europe with the Gospel. Over the years the relationship changed, and in 2006 IBRA Sweden and a church in the UK began discussing areas of working together as part of a deeper commitment for Missions. As a result, an IBRA Mission Conference was held in March 2006, with participants from different Churches in the UK, together with Missionaries to South Asia.

The discussions continued with visits from in Sweden, and resulted in a working agreement that formed IBRA UK to factilitate and channel interests in Media Missions from the UK, throughout the World.

The goal is to reach the unreached of the World, and to do it together!

Extending God's Kingdom - with new media tools!

Mass media communication has a vital role in spreading the Gospel of Jesus throughout the world. It means that as a Global Ministry, IBRA is focussing on all different kinds of media, such as TV (satellite & local), Web-Radio and Web-TV, Follow-up through Internet, phone calls, e-mails etc. And a web-based global training - courses.distancemedia.net - in partnership with Radio Worldwide.

The ministry is only possible through the support of Christians who share the vision. Pray for the continuing growth of this ministry, so that even more people can be reached with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ! If you would like to know more, please contact IBRA
